In the early 20th century soldiers from the Indian Army camped at Hampton Court Palace on a number of occasions for coronations and peace celebrations. But behind all the pomp and ceremony was a much darker side. In this episode, Exhibition Lead Zakira Begum and Community Curators Rav Singh and Dr Tej Pal Singh Ralmill cover the background and context of the British Empire and the Indian Army, unpicking how the two are connected through the rise of the East India Company, to the birth of the British Raj in India.

Mark Smith meets the family of a Sikh soldier who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Second World War – and his extraordinary valuation of the medal moves the soldier’s son to tears.

Bringing Hidden Sikh Histories to Life: Q&A with Rav Singh, ‘A little History of the Sikhs’ and Community Partner for ‘Indian Army at the Palace’.

The Indian Army at the Palace display, launching at Hampton Court Palace in September 2023, is the result of three years' collaboration between Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that cares for the palace, and our community partners who have generously given their time and expertise. This new collection of objects, photographs, films and personal stories follows on from 'Standing with Giants' which was displayed in the palace grounds in 2021 and 2022. Here, Rav Singh, founder of 'A little History of the Sikhs' and Historic Royal Palaces’ community partner for both Standing with Giants and The Indian Army at the Palace, explains more about the project's significance.

India, Pakistan and what later became Bangladesh were created out of the former colony is being celebrated At the stroke of midnight on 15 August 1947, a fissure was cleaved in what some had previously referred to as the jewel in the crown of the British empire. The 75th anniversary of the moment when in South Asia this weekend. But the partition of British India into the new nations by a line drawn by a civil servant on a map, triggered a series of events the consequences of which millions are still living with today. This explains why that Partition still has such a lasting legacy.
