Arts for Solidarity: A First Mapping of Sikh Creative Response to the Indian Farmers' Protest in the UK

This Creative Itinerary of British Sikh Solidarity and Resistance is a key outcome of the research project “Arts for Solidarity: A First Mapping of Sikh Creative Response to the Indian Farmers’ Protest in the UK.”

While the farmers’ protest saw participation from agricultural workers across multiple Indian states, Sikh farmers from Punjab and Haryana were central to the movement. Their activism resonated powerfully with Sikh communities worldwide — particularly in the UK.

British Sikh artists used their creativity to raise awareness and express solidarity, contributing powerful artworks and participating in public demonstrations. Many British Sikh organisations also played a pivotal role in mobilising support and organising protests across the UK.

This website presents the first initiative to map and document the creative, cultural, and activist responses of British Sikhs to the farmers’ protest. The Creative Itinerary offers an overview of key protest sites in Britain, artistic contributions, and moments of transnational solidarity that crossed borders, territories, and communities.

While not exhaustive, this project marks an important starting point in recognising the scale, significance, and creativity of British Sikh activism in response to a global movement for justice and farmers’ rights.

Collaboration

Led by Dr. Clelia Clini (London Metropolitan University), in collaboration with A Little History of the Sikhs and funded by the British Academy’s BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants Programme (2023–2024), the project explores how British Sikh artists and communities responded to the historic farmers’ protest that took place in India between 2020 and 2021.
